Maria T. Oliver-Hoyo is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at North Carolina State University where she pursues her interests in chemical education research. Her innovative ways of instruction have awarded her the Leroy and Elva Martin Award for Teaching Excellence (2001) and the Outstanding Teacher Award (2009) incorporating her into the NC States Academy of Outstanding Teachers. Research interests include the development and assessment of curricular materials that include a broad spectrum, from activity-based instruction to sensorial and nanotechnology experiments, to the use of physical models to promote visual-perceptual skills. Her studies on the impact of education reform dissemination on student performance and attitudes have added a wealth of information to the research on teaching and learning in chemistry. Her research has been generously funded by the prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER Award. She is a leader in the Chemical Education community of the United States currently elected as Member-at-Large of the Division of Chemical Education of the American Chemical Society.
